Terranea Resort

Across Abalone Cove, the very large buildings are of the new, controversial Terranea Resort being build at the location of old Marineland. The photo was taken yesterday, when the sky and water were exceptionally blue. For a closer view of Terranea, see Sarah A.'s Rancho PV-DP http://dailyphotofromranchopalosverdes.blogspot.com/2008/06/terranea-resort.html

Swim Club & RAT Beach

The old Swim Club (and later Roessler Memorial Pool) was restored in 1992 & is now the private PV Beach & Athletic Club (members can bring friends for a fee). RAT beach (which stands for "Right After Torrance") is in the background.

W is for ... ABC Wednesday

This particular center is a place of solace for cancer patients in the South Bay area and is located in Redondo Beach by the pier. Their "MISSION is to help people affected by cancer enhance their health and well-being through participation in a professional program of emotional support, education, and hope - all completely free of charge." http://www.wellnessandcancer.org/

Pampas at Sunset

Pampas grass, or Cortaderia selloana, can be found all over the peninsula. Nowdays this pretty South American import is considered an invasive weed in California, as in other states & countries.

Last Departure

...not for the airplane but for my Dad, who today was on this plane, returning to his native Croatia after living 37 years in the Los Angeles area. "Tata, sretan ti put!"

Reading the Sunday Paper

Portugese Bend cove (accessed down the cliffs from Trump GC) is a great spot for walking the dogs ... or reading the paper?
Amy enjoyed a dip on these dog days of summer.

Saturday night ... at the mall

A great place on a hot summer evening is the open-air mall with a fancy name of "Promenade on the Peninsula". I caught it later in the evening when everyone was done "promenading" & was at the movies or maybe the bookstore.

Takeoff @ SEATAC: Sky Watch Friday

not from Palos Verdes but from Seattle's beautiful airport and ... "Ground Watch" ...
... a perfect day in Seattle.

Neptune at the Plaza

Neptune fountain, a 3/4 scale replica of the bronze original in Bologna, Italy is located in the center of Malaga Cove Plaza. The fountain was first installed in the 1920's and replaced in 1969 with one additional alteration from the original - anyone care to guess what it is? (Hint: It's not the soda can on the trident.)

"V" Storefronts: ABC Wednesday

Village stores along Deep Valley Drive, part of The Brickwalk. The black tarp in the back is protecting the hill from erosion, the landslide happened about 10 years ago.

A Classic Beauty: Malaga Cove Plaza

One of the earliest developments in Palos Verdes in the city of PV Estates, build in the 1920's in Spanish renaissance style. The view is of the back of the buildings forming the plaza, and the arch leads into it.

It's Back-to-Work Monday ...

...and some are already working & some are heading to work. A 18-unit condominium complex is being squeezed into a corner at Silver Spur & Crenshaw where McDonald's closed down about 5 years ago. It's part of numerous building projects in the main business area in PV (part of City of Rolling Hills Est.) to create "a European-style village complete with with high-density condominiums, apartments, offices and small businesses." We'll see if the development lives up to its ambition.

Palos Verdes from across the bay

Palos Verdes Peninsula as seen from Pepperdine Univ. in Malibu, looking across the Santa Monica Bay. PV often has its own special cloud, often during summer afternoons, so my close friend has dubbed it "Alaska".

Hillside along Silver Spur

Silver Spur is the main street through the business area of Rollings Hills Estates. This view is of the hillside close to Crenshaw Blvd. intersection, across from Longs Drugs. The picture below shows the same hill in early April.

"Good Year" & Friend... Sky Watch Friday

The blimp airship operations are nearby in Carson so we see it hum by often. The biplane pilot seemed to be trying to get a closer look and kept buzzing around the blimp. I had a hard time getting the two together in the photo.

Mansion in the mist

We are getting a bit of "June gloom" - the coastal fog that covers the LA basin especially in the mornings and afternoons. The mansion is one of many in Palos Verdes Estates, the first city developed on the peninsula in the 1920's.

Jacarandas in Bloom

The blue jacarandas are in full bloom all over the hill, and I can't help taking photos of them (just like Petrea in Pasadena). The road is Hawthorne Blvd with many cars usually whizing by. Occasionally a jogger or a dog-walker use this stretch, still I was surprised when the boys popped through the fence.

Coastal Access

This view is from the public access area of the Trump National Golf Course looking down at Portugese Bend; the access is a nice wide lawn on top of the bluff, with a trail to the shore. The golf course first opened as Ocean Trails, had a landslide that swallowed up the 18th hole, was then bought by Trump & restored/reopened in 2006.

St. Paul's Lutheran, one of the Korean churches on the hill, located on Palos Verdes Drive West was adding a fresh coat of paint to its lovely cross.

"Hanger" Band

These four guys were having a great time jambing on a Saturday morning in a hanger at Torrance Airport - definitely upscale from a garage band. They sounded really good & must perform around the area.

Twilight & Crescent Moon - Sky Watch Friday

I looked out my window Thursday evening & knew this was a Sky Watch moment. I do need to figure out how to get the moon crisp in the photo -- it was just a perfect crescent.

Red Bicycle Art

I drive by this bike every day and still find it amusing. The post is on the corner of Hawthorne Blvd & Ravenspur; the art was placed there year ago by the art enthusiast owner of the adjacent apartment buildings.
For a art-bike of a different color, check out Eric's SaltLakeCityDP.

Stairway to ... reading

Back to one of my favorite places...the main library. The stairway is not used that often as it's the back entry from Silver Spur Rd. The tables and chairs were recently added with a couple of food & coffee vending machines.

Theme Day: My Corner Store

The Corner Store is a true neighborhood store, where people of all ages come for candy, coffee, drinks, sandwiches, desserts, or just to catch up on the neighborhood news. It's located in White Point area of San Pedro, a harbor city just south of Palos Verdes. My friend & I regularly walk there from her house.
